Meet Will

will_dem_smallHi everyone – meet Will.  Will is my nephew, and is my sister Melissa’s oldest son.

Aside from his youthful good looks Will has one other major characteristic – he is really smart. The tests prove it, and he freely admits it.

You might think you’re smart – but you’re not – at least compared to Will.

I encountered Will’s mental acuity when he  almost beat me at checkers last Christmas – the game was a draw.  From the stunned expression on his face I could almost hear his brain  repeating “this does not compute”. It’s unlikely he’ll let that happen again.

will_2_sparklersAt BAGSFOW, when Will’s not dominating at the gaming table or performing other feats of cerebral dexterity he will play a very important role managing the technical aspects of the event.

At right we see Will performing a bit of nuclear fusion in his spare time.  Now if he can only invent a way to clean his bedroom!

Hoedown in the Hocking Hills!

squaredancingYeee-Haw!  Swing your partner and do-si-doh!  Hey, keep off the toes.  That’s right. Get out your steel toed cowboy boots and your prettiest crinolines – the Hale/Quiring clans are going square dancing.  Friday July 19th, after the rehearsal, we all head over to Uncle
Buck’s Riding and Drinking Barn for a finger lickin’ good meal and then an evening of old fashioned square dance fun. It all begins at 6:30 PM.

squarecallerStarting at 7 PM, Gary Lehman and the Country Strings will be performing – and some of their wives will be there to show us all the ropes. (This isn’t actually their picture…)

Here is what Logan Daily News’ LESLIE GRAY has to say about them:

LOGAN — This week’s Music in the Park performers are Gary Lehman and The Country Strings, who will take the stage at 7 p.m. Friday in Logan’s Worthington Park.

“We’ve played here for a number of years off and on since it started,” Gary Lehman, lead singer and drums, said.  The remaining band members of Gary Lehman and The Country Strings include Paul Sneider of Lancaster on steel guitar; Bob Holland of Hebron, lead guitar, rhythm bass and vocals; Bob Parsley of Groveport, lead bass and vocals; and Stephanie Magill of Groveport, bass and vocals.

The band formed based on friendships and associations with other musicians throughout the years.  Lehman and Sneider have performed together for about 40 years, beginning in a different band. Holland has been with the group about 25 years, Parsley about 10 years and his daughter Magill about five years.

“We really do a lot of old standard country,” Lehman said. The group also plays square dance music when the opportunity arises.

For the past 25 years, Gary Lehman and The Country Strings have performed at the Gibisonville Recreation Center the first Saturday of every month from November to March for round and square dances.

squarefinalGood Food! Square dancing! In a “drinking barn”! What more could you ask for?

Bob and Gayle’s Stupendously Fabulous Orthodox Wanderings

bob_gayle_born_moscowWhen we originally registered we didn’t realize how versatile the name would be.

BAGSFOW is honored to be the unofficial non-corporate sponsor for Bob and Gayle Born’s (one of my big sisters)  trip to Russia. Their trek takes them on a tour of Orthodox churches, museums and historical sites throughout Russia.  They say they’ve been walking up to six miles a day (at that rate it will only take them 3 years to cross the entire country).

We’re looking forward to being regaled around the campfire with tales from their journey – and I know they’ll be glad to be back in the USA eating some fine southern Ohio cooking!  However it’s not all cabbage and Borst in Russia…this is where they ate in Saint Petersburg. Dinner in St. Petersburg

Church Museum on Red SquareOn the 4th of July, they were at Red Square.  Pretty spectacular!  All the way USA, comrades!

Gina’s Gourmet Desserts

wedding cakeThis photo is the inspiration for BAGSFOW’s wedding cake!  Ours will be two tiered with raspberry and custard filling, and lemon cheesecake filling. Yum!

Gina has been making cakes, desserts, donuts and pies for over 35 years.  Let’s all give it up for Gina!

And now it’s time to play, Guess What Gina Will Be Making?  A small hint: one night the dessert will be gluten free but delicious.

If you guessed this one, you are wrong!  Trick question. I don’t much like coconut…

Four fabulous desserts, so little time to eat them!

Dear Old Mom & Dad

dorkstalkingFred is 32 years old and he is still single. One day a friend asked, “Why aren’t you married? Can’t you find a woman who will be a good wife?”
Fred replied, “Actually I’ve found many women that I have wanted to marry, but when I bring them home to meet my parents, my mother doesn’t like them.”
His friend thinks for a moment and says, “I’ve got the perfect solution. Just find a girl who’s just like your mother.”
A few months later they meet again and his friend asks, “Did you find the perfect girl? Did your mother like her?”
With a frown on his face Fred answers, “Yes, I found the perfect girl. She was just like my mother. You were right, my mother liked her very much.”
The friend said, “Then what’s the problem?”
Fred replied, ” My father doesn’t like her.”
